Proliferating during the first half of the twentieth century, little magazines reflected the revolutionary intents of their contributors and audiences. These periodicals functioned as virtual salons, galleries, and forums–spaces where creators, editors, critics, and readers presented and considered radical ideas in art, literature, politics, and philosophy.
Focused on Dada and Surrealism, this symposium explores the role that little magazines played in the transmission, reception, and circulation of Modernist ideas in the transatlantic world.
Speakers include Mary Ann Caws (City University of New York), Katharine Conley (William & Mary), and Lori Cole (New York University). The symposium’s moderator, Douglas Cushing, is a doctoral candidate in art history at the University of Texas at Austin and the 2018–2019 Vivian L. Smith Fellow at the Menil Collection.
