Surrealism played a double role as both historical touchstone and contemporary of artistic movements that emerged after World War II. This symposium will consider Surrealism’s impact on the development and reception of Pop Art, Happenings, and Narrative Figuration, among others, within the international cultural ferment of the 1960s. Speakers include Dr. Sandra Zalman (University of Houston) and Dr. Steven Harris (University of Alberta), with a video essay by artist Jean-Jacques Lebel.
Symposium moderator Claire Howard is a doctoral candidate in art history at The University of Texas at Austin and the 2016–2017 Vivian L. Smith Foundation Fellow at the Menil Collection.
