Although Saul Steinberg worked across media, from drawing and painting to collage and sculpture, he is best known for drawings he made for The New Yorker. For nearly six decades, Steinberg satirized government bureaucracy and modern life in the pages of this magazine. He drew City Hall, Houston, Texas, in the late 1970s, resulting from one of many cross-country road trips he made to study architecture and to document his everyday encounters. Civic and municipal buildings were one of his ongoing themes, an extension of his interest in, and critique of, power and its forms of presentation.
